About CSIC and the Catalan Delegation
The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is the largest public research institution in Spain and the third largest in Europe. It is attached to the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, through the General Secretariat for Research. Its fundamental objective is to develop and promote research for the benefit of scientific and technological progress, for which it is open to collaboration with Spanish and foreign entities. Its mission is to promote, coordinate, develop, and disseminate multidisciplinary scientific and technological research in order to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and to economic, social, and cultural development, as well as to the training of personnel and the provision of advice to public and private entities in this field.
CSIC plays a central role in science and technology policy, encompassing everything from basic research to the transfer of knowledge to the productive sector. The driving force behind research is its centers and institutes, distributed throughout all the autonomous communities, and its more than 15,000 employees, of whom over 3,000 are tenured researchers and a similar number are doctoral students and scientists in training. In Catalonia, the CSIC has a staff of 1,834, of whom 708 are civil servants and 1,126 are contract workers (data from June 2023).
The CSIC accounts for 6 percent of the personnel dedicated to Research and Development in Spain, generating approximately 20 percent of the national scientific output. It also manages a range of important infrastructures, the most comprehensive and extensive network of specialized libraries, and has joint research units.
The CSIC in Catalonia also participates in other research centers in this autonomous community, either as a member of their boards of trustees or through associated units, and actively collaborates with industry and stakeholders in the national, regional, and international R&D system. The CSIC Delegation in Catalonia, which reports to the Vice Presidency of Organization and Institutional Relations of the CSIC, is responsible for coordinating and strengthening the CSIC's relations with the different institutions and entities in Catalonia.
